About the Event
Soloists: Zoe Brookshaw, William Purefoy, Mark Wilde, Christian Andreas Violins: Kelly McCusker and Miranda Walton
A feast of Bach’s choral and orchestral music, with baroque musicians and star soloists – in a cathedral made for this kind of musical event.
Bach's Magnificat in D of 1733 (a reworked version of the original E-flat major composition) centres on the response of Mary, mother of Jesus, to Gabriel's news. This sequence of beautiful movements is one of the core pieces of Bach Choir repertoire. On this occasion we are pairing it with the less well-known Ascension Oratorio 'Lobet Gott in seinen Reichen' (BWV 11), with equally rich scoring reminiscent of the great Christmas Oratorio - all complemented by an orchestral treat, the beautiful Double Violin Concerto!
