The Italian Symphony
Wed 17 Oct 2018
Derby Cathedral
About the Event
This event is promoted by Sinfonia Viva, Derby LIVE are pleased to act as a ticket agent.
Be enchanted by the East Midlands only professional orchestra Sinfonia Viva, as they offer up a balanced programme of contrasts and virtuoso musicality. Featuring Oboe Soloist Maddy Aldis-Evans, Violin Soloist Benedict Holland and led by Principal Conductor Frank Zielhorst.
A journey of tantalising highs, the programme starts with Stravinsky’s Dumbarton Oaks, an ode to the spirit of Bach with its nods to the Baroque style realised in modern harmonic, rhythmic, and melodic idioms. The programme then glides into Bach’s gracious and spirited Oboe & Violin Concerto, featuring both soloists in an expansive duet, weaving crisscross solo lines that echo phrases back and forth like musical questions and answers. The piece’s nonstop finale is brisk and exhilarating, matching Respighi’s sparkling instrumental colour and swift contrasts of volume and tempo in Gli Uccelli (The Birds).
Mendelssohn’s classic Symphony No.4 lights the musical fireworks as a spectacular climax to the concert. Known as the ‘Italian,’ it is an instantly recognisable all-time favourite for many and an extravagant, memorable finale.
